Product Review

Good for wasting time, have a powerful pc though!

by   pabucksguy ,   Jun 21, 2007

Pros:  graphics, sound

Cons:  monotonous story line

The Bottom Line:  If you have a few bucks and a few hours to kill, it is worthwhile. Don't spend over $19, it is not worth it.

Author's Review

I purchased my copy of Spiderman 3 for PC (DVD) for $19.00 at Circuit City. At that price, I would recommend it as something to waste some time with. If it was even a dollar more, I would say spend the money elsewhere.
My review:

Graphics: You MUST have a powerful graphics card for this game, or else you will have to turn off all of the rich detail. (I run a PCIe Radeon 1800 with 512mb ram) The graphics are actually very good. On the PC version, I have not experienced a single “clipped wall” ghosting, or any of the problems that reviews on other platforms are getting. The camera angle actually does one of the better jobs of readjusting that I have seen in a game recently. Again, people complain on other platforms that it does not do a good job. With a good graphics card, you can really bump up the frame rate, show no pixilation, and will get good shadows and lighting. My only complaint is that sometimes you must adjust the brightness (gamma) depending on the mission you are in. The game has not skipped a single noticeable frame since I have been playing (about 5 hours).

Controls: The controls are pretty easy, but use every button on your joystick. If you are like me and cannot remember where the 12345678 LR buttons are it can be a pain in the butt when the mission tells you to hit certain combos.

Action: Though the graphics are good, you follow the same exact pattern of hitting a bunch of buttons on your gamepad to defeat the bad guys. The combo moves are way over done, there is not a simple punch or kick. Hit any two buttons in a row and Spiderman does a crazy amount of flips, kicks, etc. It is really cool at first, but after fighting your 100th bad guy the same way, it gets very very old.

Web Slinging: This is really cool, and well done…..for about ten minutes. The monotony of having to swing your way everywhere gets very old very fast.

Sound: The sound is done very well. There are lots of voices from the actors in the movies, including bruce cambell who pokes fun as a narrator throughout the game. However, I do often experience a break up in the voice when there is a lot going on in the game. This may be my dated sound card, but then again I have a SB128live, which is not entirely an outdated technology, definitely better than an on-board sound chip that most people have.

Gameplay/characters: This is where the game really slips. The game follows the same pattern over and over. …Beat up these people…unlock more people to beat up…or take a picture as peter…unlock another mission to take more pictures…or the other mission of going to disarm bombs, over and over again. Though the graphics and sound are good, the game gets old real fast. It does not have a smooth storyline as you can jump all over the place with different missions. There are characters in the game (such as kingpin and scorpion) that were not in the movie.

Overall: If you have a few dollars to spend and you see it on sale, go ahead and pick it up, it will give you about 4 hours of enjoyment before you get tired of it.
