Author's Review
I just ran across the movie the other night on one of the old movie channels on my Direct TV.
TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN was made it 1945 from Betty Smith novel, who also wrote " JOY IN THE MORNING.' I love that book, but didn't like the movie JOY IN THE MORNING. So I understand if you read the book of A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN , the movie would come short. I remember reading the Book A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN, but don't recall much about it.
Was doing researched on the web about the movie A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN , and read what they said how the book covered so much more than movie did. I believe this is true. So if do yourself a favor if a movie or a book of the same, watched and read both. Their nothing better than see the characters you read about come to live in a movie even if you thought they left the best parts out.
CAST:
Dorothy McGuire as Katie Nolan
James Dunn as Johnny Nolan
Peggy Ann Garner as Francie Nolan
Ted Donaldson as Neeley Nolan
Joan Blondell as Aunt Sissy
Lloyd Nolan as Officer McShane
I like the way the movie and story draws you into the 1900 big city life. They way the children of the area all went down and bid on day old bread, and how they collect junk and sold it, and Neely being smart enough to know his sister Francie could get a better price if she sold their junk.
And when Francie and her father Johnny hatched up the idea for her to go to the better school across town, way above their station in life. But Francie was a child that wanted to learn and Neeley was in school just because he had to be.
Johnny was smart enough to know a child who wants to learn, should at all cost. Katie learn this to be true almost too late, but it took Johnny death for her to see, somethings are important to fight for, your dreams are one of them.
Katie might kept the family feed and a place to lived, it sad Johnny thought she he was a worthless. She really didn't when it came right down to it. She told him that in so many words and she told her sister that, but we found out she didn't mean it.
How special it was the roses were there right when Francie need them most, her Father couldn't be there in life was there in spirit. And the all important part of grief Francie could cry for her father.
The way KatIe had to scrubbed all the halls and saved every penny in her money jar she hid in under a floor board.
Officer Nolan seem to know a head of time Katie be a widow and free to marry him ,they way he just kept hanging around so helpful.
I loved the movie. I watched again.
