This selection of episodes of Fox's popular science fiction drama spans the entirety of its nine seasons on air, tracing the mythology behind the mysterious "black oil." THE X-FILES was revolutionary in the scope of its story arc, inventing convoluted mythologies of conspiracy, aliens, ghosts, and paranormal activities of a complexity that was new to television. Here, Scully searches for the truth behind her abduction, locating a group of self-proclaimed survivors, all of whom have the same chip embedded in their necks that Scully found in her own. Alex Krycek, whom the agents meet while investigating a sunken ship and the black oil, claims to own "proof" of extraterrestrials, leading Mulder on a wild goose chase to Siberia. Included are the episodes "Nisei," "Herrenvolk," "Tempus Fugut," and "Gethsemane," among others.

Some Great Episodes Of "The X-Files," But Hardly All(Or Even Mostly)About "The Black Oil!"

Pros: Some truly inspired episodes with great stories, acting and character, DVD bonus features are interesting.

Cons: Does not actually tell a cohesive story.

The Bottom Line: A set of some great episodes of"The X-Files,""The Black Oil"hardly tells the story of the alien known as the Black Oil and merely presents a decent digest of episodes.
