To Forgive is Devine ? but can it Atone?

Date of Review:  Jun 30, 2003
The Bottom Line: A youngsters misconception that changes lives and follows through the horrors of war and ends in the late 1990's.
Review: ATONEMENT

Ian McEwan , Londoner, has done it again. He has put together a powerful book that expands from 1935 to the end of the twentieth century. I avoid most modern day British authors – (I hope my British Son-In-Law doesn't read this)...

A Few Problems with England's Favorite Novelist

Date of Review:  Jul 16, 2002
The Bottom Line: This is highly literate and intelligent writing. It's a fascinating story premise and idea. I disagree with the focus and the way in which the Author told it, though.
Review: English Author Ian McEwan's novel, "Atonement" focuses heavily on World War 2. Unfortunately, the back flap of the novel doesn't tell you this. I would have liked to be forewarned as I am not a fan of war stories and novels that heavily emphasize...

Powerful Story of Love, Loss and Redemption

Date of Review:  May 20, 2008
The Bottom Line: Almost a family saga, "Atonement" is a well-written story of love, loss and redemption and the lessons we learn along the way.
Review: My Opinion

This is the first book by Ian McEwan that I have read. I tend to read dry historical accounts, or, if I feel wild, historical fiction. I wanted to read "Atonement" before I actually saw the film, as books tend to be better than...

Professional Reviews

Times Literary Supplement: "As well as being a superb writer of place, McEwan is also among the finest practitioners of the free indirect style in English, and each phrase in ATONEMENT vibrates with the voice of the character it is so discreetly ventriloquizing....The dust jacket proclaims ATONEMENT his finest achievement, and although publishers are prone to this...view of their authors' talents, in this case they are triumphantly right."

First Line

The play--for which Briony had designed the posters, programs and tickets, constructed the sales booth out of a folding screen tipped on its side, and lined the collection box in red crjpe paper--was written by her in a two-day tempest of composition, causing her to miss a breakfast and a lunch.
