I will never shop with eCost again.  They are scammers, and I think they didn't actually want to sell me what they promised.  Here's the full text of my email chain:

That's crazy. I order things on line all the time, and I have never been
asked for anything like this before. I am not giving you a copy of my
drivers license and my credit card statement - why don't you just send me
your social security # and we can call it even? And why would I call AmEx
- I've been using the card all day today and every other order I have
placed has sailed through.

I think you can either process my order, switch me to PayPal, or cancel the
whole thing.

The website lists the item as out of stock, with an increased price of
$550. If I cancel the order, I would have to pay another $100 and wait an
unknown amount of time for it.

Regardless, this is too stupid for words and I have other choices about
where I shop. Cancel my order.
