Things Remembered

A review by Beawriter written on Dec 15, 2001

Pros:  A personalized gift for someone special

Cons:  Too expensive for the average person

The Bottom Line:  As a wedding or anniversary gift I think this store offers a good selection and the engraving makes it extra special.

Full review
I was attracted to the Things Remembered online store when looking for something different, and something very personal. I did find their gift catalog on line very attractive and found many things I thought were pretty.

Checking on the cost of engraving I was floored by the cost. I mean why should it cost about $3.00 a letter? This isn't a really complicated process. They have the tools and it certainly doesn't take long to engrave. I know they often use templates that cuts down on errors.

The positive aspect of this gift is that it is special for a wedding, anniversary or other important event. The cost of engraving actually is often more than the gift itself, especially if you want a particular sentiment on the piece. On the plus side, it is a unique gift for a precious person, especially if they have everything they need. It will be a memorable gift.

So when I was looking for something different for my Aunt's 91st birthday I thought a gift from this online store would be perfect. I changed my mind when I figured in the cost of engraving and decided on having flowers delivered instead.

Would I ever consider buying from this store? Yes. If a dear friend or relative was getting married I'd consider having an engraved memorable gift for them. I'd do this especially for a couple who had already established their home and didn't need another toaster, microwave or blender. It would be something they'd cherish and keep for as long as they were married, which hopefully would be forever. Since weddings are so expensive, the cost of the gift would not be a factor. There is a $50 maximum price on engraving so it would not be unreasonable to spend $100 or more on a wedding gift.

I thought the selection of gift items was fine. They had everything from glasses, glass boxes, to music boxes. It is easy to order on line.

My final opinion is that 95% of the time I'd buy something else and not spend the extra needed for engraving. Heck, I could get personalized items from the Lillian Vernon catalog at much lower price. But that 5% of the time if I needed something extraordinary, I'd consider spending the money on an engraved gift from Things Remembered.
