Kohl's is a good department store. I like their prices and product lines (not too shabby, not too ritzy). They have regular, decent sales.
However, their web development and online fulfillment is truly pathetic. I have purchased from them online twice in the past year. Both times the web site, after my order was submitted, offered the opportunity to match a password with my email address, in order to return and have my information retained. Both times, I chose that option, which promptly failed.
I live close to a local brick & mortar location, so I check their deals online fairly regularly. The site often contains dead or misdirected links. For example, on Black Friday in the morning hours, their huge ad banner for the big sale linked to an error message on their web
development server.
Finally, their fulfillment process doesn't even square up with a good 1980's era catalog merchant. I ordered one in-stock item on Cyber Monday (12/01), which they finally packaged and labeled for shipment today (12/07). The confirmation email says that now it will be 7-10 days until I receive it, which is entirely believable, because: 1) the last time that I ordered about 6 months ago, it took
over 2 weeks to receive my order, and 2) it was shipped via a method wherein FedEx takes it from hub to hub, and the USPS handles the rest. USPS at Christmas time? I'll consider myself lucky to get it within 10 more days.
Kohl's probably thinks this is perfectly reasonable, but contrast this with some gifts I ordered from a different merchant on Black Friday, with the slowest, free shipping option, and received on the following Tuesday. Compare it to the shoes that I ordered today (Sunday) that will be delivered for free on Tuesday, and you can see why I think that retailers like Kohl's that can't do online properly deserve all the misery that this weak economy can serve up.
