I've been a long-time customer of Amazon and have generally been willing to pay a little more for the convenience of Amazon's site. That is until now.
I'm spending some time overseas and therefore, thought I'd try the Amazon International Shipping service. My recommendation, don't bother.
First off, the service is difficult to find and instead of marking items as "eligible" for International shipping the customer must find and select items from a completely different category. The categories are impossible to navigate to, google for them and you have a place to start.
That's not so bad, but put an item in your shopping cart and Amazon suggests other items that other shoppers have also purchased or they suggest item 'bundles.'The problem with the bundles, often the bundled items aren't also eligible for International shipping. Other times the item is available for international shipping but they've coded in the wrong item number (seems when an item is eligible is has two item numbers?).
So, add a bundled item to your order and the order is rejected. Now try to navigate back to the international category item? it isn't there any more... rinse, lather, repeat.
The final straw? I see an item, place it in the shopping cart and enter my credit card number. When I hit "confirm purchase" the item has disappeared. Apparently someone else purchased the item? They can't even do a short record lock on an item, especially an item that has a stock of quantity 1?
Called customer service, "we're sorry, it happens some times" and "it wouldn't be fair to our other customers if we locked items as they went into shopping carts" translation? We simply don't care about your experience with us, we're going to take the first cash through the door.
So more than five years of buying stuff through Amazon is at an end. I've asked them to delete my account - and they've sent me a weak excuse of an email, suggesting that 'it happens' and defending their system. I have 25 years in networks and systems, I understand this stuff and Amazon can do better, they just don't want to do better - so I've asked them to delete my account again, we'll see where I get with that.
